Album 1969-82

Artist: Guido Guidi

Author: Guido Guidi

Publisher: Mack Editions

Album, 1969–82 is the second of three complementary volumes that address Guidi's black-and-white work from the late 1960s to the early 1980s, offering illuminating insights into the development of his practice and a broader exploration of photography between art and functionality, realism and surrealism, truth and fabrication.

To this end, while organising his archives, Guido Guidi rediscovered negatives and prints from a prolific and productive period early in his career. These photographs, taken with black-and-white film and small formats, captured his daily life in the 1970s—his family and friends, his colleagues at the University of Architecture in Venice—but also more fragmented and even abstract scenes: objects in disarming isolation, shadows, symbols, and deserted streets.

The high contrast and disorienting framing made many of these images as graphic as they were documentary. Some were marked by remnants of captions, half-faded notes and other signs of their life in previous sequences and contexts.

Adopting a title he had used for several projects at the time, including a publication never realised with Luigi Ghirri for the publisher Punto e Virgola, Guidi constructed a new “album”: a fresh engagement with historical works, drawing on the anarchic energy and interests of his youth as well as the sharp and sensitive instincts of an expert editor.

The resulting book brings together the everyday with the strange, the recognisable with the ambiguous, in a contemporary and remarkable work by a great modern master.
