Di sguincio—which means “at an angle,” “oblique,” or “seen out of the corner of the eye”—brings together more than a hundred black-and-white photographs taken by Guido Guidi with small-format cameras between 1969 and 1981. These images bear witness to the early experimental dialogues between Guidi and his camera: taken without looking through the viewfinder and lit by a bright flash, they capture people, bodies, gestures, minor events, and fragments of space in sudden, even aggressive encounters. Although formally austere and even bordering on abstraction, they document people and places close to him—his family home in Cesena, the friends with whom he shared an apartment in Treviso, colleagues at the Institute of Architecture at the University of Venice—forming affectionate personal works that explore the performative tension at the heart of the image.
This book reproduces Guidi's prints from that period, with their high contrast, unusual blurring and sharpness, as well as their oblique, sometimes indiscernible handwritten annotations. Evoking the joys of invention and collaboration at the beginning of an artistic career, these fragments also reflect the psychological, social, and political turmoil of Italy at a time of crisis and questioning of social values, metabolizing the influences of neorealism and postmodernism in the search for new forms. The fundamental photographic theme of time—as recorded, experienced, and manipulated—is their elusive constant. With Di sguincio, we discover a collection of anti-documents or anachronistic documents—stamped, annotated, and sometimes artificially aged—that ironically comment on photography's claims to truth and reveal the foundations of a lifelong engagement with the medium's possibilities.
