octopus notes is an annual journal that gathers critical essays, academic writing, interviews, archival documents and artist’s projects. Each issue exists without a theme, but connections echo through its content.
"This issue has been built like all our previous ones : over a long period of time and through a series of rebounds. It is an opportunity to highlight the research that has accompanied us in recent years (Hélène Giannecchini's on the work of Donna Gottschalk, Christine Burgin's on the Denton family, Sibylle de Laurens' on James Robert Baker and Sophie Lapalu's on Jeffrey Perkins), to share a few discoveries: the works of Billy Sullivan, Žibuntas Mikšys, and Martha Edelheit; but also to celebrate the arrival of long-awaited guests (Marlene Monteiro Freitas and Paul McCarthy in two lengthy interviews); as well as reunions, notably with Liz Magor and Moyra Davey, for whom we publish the second part of an interview begun in issue 10. It's a question of writing (the writing of a film for Jean-Claude Biette and Gaspard Nectoux), of the epiphanies to which research sometimes leads (Paul Thek's works on the island of Ponza); but also of the importance of surrounding ourselves with new intelligences to think our existences. Samuel Steward's letter to the young man who confided in him about his alcoholism, which ends with the words: “A lot of us are standing beside you,” is a must-read."
