Provoke Facsimile (réédition 2018)

Provoke was originally conceived by the art critic Koji Taki (1928–2011) and the photographer Takuma Nakahira (1938–2015), with the poet Takahiko Okada (1939–1997) and the photographer Yutaka Takanashi as dojin members. The magazine's subtitle was 'Provocative Materials for Thought', and each issue comprised photographs, essays and poems. After publishing the second and third issues with Daido Moriyama as the next member, the group broke up with their final publication, First, Abandon the World of Pseudo-Certainty – a general edition of the three issues. Provoke's grainy and blurry photographs were initially ridiculed as being 'bure-boke' and sparked much controversy, but they had a strong impact on the world of photography during this period. Today, however, Provoke has become an extremely rare book and very few people have seen the original.

Provoke has attracted increasing attention in recent years, both in Japan and abroad. In 2016, a large photography exhibition entitled Provoke: Between Protest and Performance Photography in Japan, 1960–1975, first opened in Austria, then toured Switzerland, France, and the United States. Provoke challenged existing photographic conventions and raised fundamental questions about visual perception, amidst the social and political upheavals of the late 1960s. Today, the world is gradually recognising and re-examining its significance in a multitude of contexts.

Published as part of The Japanese Box: A facsimile reprint of six rare photographic publications from the Provoke era*, the Provoke reprint has its photographic images cropped to approximately 3 mm from the edges for binding purposes. The reprint also does not include the texts of Takahiko Okada due to copyright issues. Provoke: Complete Reprint by NITESHA retains the original size of the images and includes all the original texts, as well as those by Takahiko Okada. Additionally, the volumes are accompanied by complete translations in English and Chinese of the original Japanese texts in booklet form.
