Swan Moon's

Swan Moon by Swan Moon, is an intimate portrait of youth, identity, and performance, set against the backdrop of the faded glamour of 1990s Los Angeles. Swan Moon revisits her adolescence as a young American of Korean descent, growing up in the cultural shadow of Hollywood, where cinematic myths were ever-present and her personal story intertwined with fantasy.

While the alternative youth scene was heating up and Larry Clark’s film “Kids” was defining a generation, Moon and her friends were doing something profoundly different: they wore vintage clothes, staged improvised, cinematic settings, and lived an aesthetic that was completely out of step with their era. Their work, shot with flea-market props and makeshift lighting, exudes a sense of improvisation and whimsy, giving it an amateurish charm. Moon wasn’t imitating Cindy Sherman—she hadn’t even heard of her yet and had never seen the iconic “Untitled Film Stills”—but she drew directly from the language of cinema, seeking to inscribe herself and her circle into the medium’s canon.

These photographs evoke the domestic intimacy of the mid-20th century—gestures borrowed from the 1950s and 1960s—but subverted by the self-awareness and often heightened anxiety of the 1990s. Sexuality is present, but restrained, expressed with a tenderness that would soon disappear with the advent of the Internet. There is humor, style, and a sincere whimsy that contrasts with today’s hyper-self-consciousness and image saturation.

Conceived as a nod to Hollywood cinema, Swan Moon’s book Swan Moon features a carefully curated soundtrack and a cast list at the end. An afterword by renowned writer Chris Kraus illuminates and contextualizes this nostalgic ode that Moon offers to an idealized Los Angeles—her vision of the city and its young inhabitants, both deeply personal and seemingly frozen in time.
