To accompany its 2013 exhibition, LE BAL and Editions Xavier Barral co-published the book Dark Knees of the american photographer Mark Cohen.
A major figure in the world of street photography since the 1970s, Mark Cohen has been relentlessly shooting his hometown in Pennsylvania and the surrounding areas. Without any documentary intent, he has kept the distance of an outsider for more than forty years.
In a split second, Mark Cohen approaches his subjects closely to shoot them by surprise, sometimes dazzling them with the artificial light of the flash. In color or in black and white, his pictures, taken at arm's length most of the time without aiming, display fragments of gestures, postures or bodies. Through this stunning arrangement of lines, a nervous energy and the strangeness of everyday life emanates.
Winner of the 2014 Paris-Photo-Aperture book prize, Dark Knees is now a sold out and sought after book. A few copies are still available at the bookshop of LE BAL.
