What can we really learn from an image? How is photography constructed since its origin in a discourse of truth and how is it received as evidence?
On the occasion of the exhibition, LE BAL and Éditions Xavier Barral co-publish the book Images of conviction - The construction of visual evidence. The book gives elements of answers to these questions in eleven cases of images produced by experts, researchers and historians.
Famous photographs of the Holy Shroud, judicial images developed by Alphonse Bertillon, the first aerial photos of the front line during the First World War, images of the Nuremberg trials, photos taken with cell phones attesting to the damage caused by bombing in theaters of war in Afghanistan or Israel: scientific photography is now an essential part of any police or political investigation.
Each of the eleven cases is placed in its historical and geopolitical context, enriched by a commentary on the visual protocol used. A brilliant and well-documented publication rich in visuals and texts. Recommended.
