‘Les Carnets du BAL’'s collection aims to explore the stakes of the contemporary image and to apprehend the notion of visual "document" in all its diversity. Each subject is addressed through theoretical contributions, presentations and analyses of works by renowned artists, philosophers, historians, anthropologists and critics, based on examples chosen from the fields of photography, video and cinema.
"The first issue presents eleven unpublished contributions on the theme of "The image-document, between reality and fiction". The document is of an informative and didactic nature: a trace, a testimony, a report of an observed reality. It immediately raises the question of the forces or individuals who produced it, as well as that of the ways in which it reaches our knowledge. As a memorial object, it intersects with the "monument" constituted by any work of art, in which free rein can be given to invention, composition and fiction. The texts gathered here return on the affinities and the tensions of these two modes of apprehension of the real, that are reality and fiction, constitutive in various degrees of any "documentary work". This volume testifies to the theoretical and artistic richness of such an entanglement.” - Jean-Pierre Criqui, editorial director of Les Carnets du BAL #1.
Les Carnets du BAL #1 is based on the seminar entitled "L'Image-document entre réalité et fiction", which, at the initiative of the BAL, was held on November 3 and 4, 2009 at la Fémis in Paris.
