Les Carnets du BAL n°11 / L'image à l'épreuve des machines

What do a demonstration monitored by drones and a crowd modeled by computer graphics have in common? What happens when an artificial intelligence usurps the identity of a public figure to make hateful comments? Does the human eye still know how to distinguish the silhouette of a peasant from that of a soldier in the viewfinder of a thermal camera? Twenty years ago, the German filmmaker and theorist Harun Farocki was already questioning these operational images, whose function was neither to distract nor to inform, but to control and carry out a certain type of operations, most often, surveillance and recognition. Now these images produced by machines have gone beyond the military-industrial field to invade all spheres of existence, thus triggering a major turning point in contemporary visual culture. What regimes of (in)visibility do they generate? What social, political and also anthropological effects do they induce? And can we still talk about their image? What happens to the experience of sensitivity to the age of algorithms?
