To accompany the exhibition held in 2017, LE BAL published Magnum Analog Recovery. Through anonymous and unpublished series from the 1940’s until the 1970’s, this book offers a singular, non academic and unofficial journey through the first thirty years of the Magnum photography agency, with 231 original vintage prints.
Reproduced in a large cardboard binder reminiscent of the archive boxes from which they came, iconic images of the 20th century are displayed alongside many unpublished photographs of Henri Cartier-Bresson, Eve Arnold, René Burri, Elliott Erwitt, Alex Webb and Gilles Peress.
This book-object is far from the traditional exhibition catalog. Magnum’s texts and the quotes of the photographers (notes, letters, excerpts from correspondence or interviews...) evoke a multitude of contradictory approaches with photographers of the agency. A journey back in time through the golden age of this legendary agency that defined documentary photography.
