“An incredible exhibition catalogue on the Provoke tornado, now completely out-of-print”
The now legendary Japanese magazine Provoke changed the history of photography. On the occasion of the exhibition at LE BAL, the three issues, published from 1968 to 1969 by artists Takuma Nakahira, Yutaka Takanashi, Daido Moriyama, Koji Taki and Takahiko Okada, are reproduced in their entirety, accompanied by historical and critical texts in a now completely sold out book.
Placing the journal in a post-war context of socio-political upheaval, the book offers a cross-sectional analysis of the artists and their work while exploring Provoke's links to the emergence of contemporary performance art in Japan. Provoke - Between Protest and Performance brings together a collection of previously unpublished “Protest books”, texts from the period translated into English for the first time, works and performances by artist collectives that marked the period, interviews with Daido Moriyama, Nobuyoshi Araki, and Eiko Hosoe, as well as previously unpublished essays by historian-researchers and exhibition curators. Sold out.
